As I am reading through the numerous pension records and applications of Revolutionary war veterans, I encount -- without exception to this point -- statements to the effect that they have "lost" or "no longer have", etc. the discharge papers they may have been given when they left the service. What's up here? I know that many thought these to be of little value at the time, but why is this such a universial statement?
