The word scrimmage, as we know it today refers to an exhibition game in sports; but its original meaning, and probably the one intended here, is "a confused and/or unimportant battle or struggle". It was similar and interchangeable with the word "skirmish". It likely means that it was a battle that came upon them by accident. Two forces ran into each other and a confused, unplanned skrimish ensued.
