Re: [Uniforms] Uniforms First Manassas

1st Michigan Regiment at this time wore the issue state uniform. Although the exact nature of the Michigan state volunteers’ uniform is not known, the Quartermaster General was directed to make uniforms of ‘blue flannel or of some suitable material of blue color.” Photographs seem to indicate that at least the 4th Regiment received dark blue flannel sack coats and dark blue trousers in 1861. The 1st Regiment was issued the sme uniform.

However, at least one company was reported in Washington DC in a gray uniform. This must have been a pre war uniform The 1st Michigan was made from pre war militia and several units wore gray uniforms. It may have been The Detroit Light Guard. If so the DLG for fatigue duties enlisted men wore grey shell jackets with epaulettes and dark blue trousers and dark blue US Army-style forage caps. Officers apparently wore dark blue frock coats for fatigue. Cross belts were white as were waist belts.

1st regiment 1861::

Detroit Light Guard

Jackson Greys

Coldwater Cadets

Manchester Union Guards

Steuben Guards

Michigan Huzzars

Burr Oak Guards

Ypsilanti Light Guards

Marshall Light Guards

Hardee Cadets

I hope this helps.
