The 3 month 1st Michigan Regiment returned to Michigan Sep. 7 1861 and was immediately reorganized at Ann Arbor, Michigan into the 1st Michigan Regiment (3 year regiment) with 960 men. At this time the State of Michigan provided initial uniforms. Again I believe the state issued 9 button coats and 5 button coats, but no record as to what unit got which. From photos it appears that 5 button coat was more common than the often sited 9 button coat. In 1863 the 1st Michigan Regiment was issued federal supplied uniforms (see Frederick Todd’s American Military Equipment 1851 – 1872).
According to Frederick Todd in the book American Military Equipment 1851 – 1872 the 16th Michigan Regiment (organized in 1861) was issued State of Michigan uniforms. The state still issued dark blue trousers until 1862. I have never seen information that the state sent replacement uniforms to units in the theater of operations and after many months of hard service the men would have needed new uniforms. It would seem possible that the federal government sometimes replaced worn out uniforms with standard federal issue. In fact in 1862 the federal government took over supply uniforms to Michigan regiments. Do you know when the photos were taken? Can you tell if the coats have standing collars or epaulets?
I hope this helps. Get back to me if you need any more information or have any for me.
