[Uniforms] service chevrons

while visiting ftlaramie, i discovered post ordnance sergeantleodegar schnyder who served there for 37 years with a total of 53 years total continous service. a black and white photo showed at least 9 five year sevice chevrons on his sleeve.my question is in the 1870s and 1880s,if someone had 40-50 years service in different branches(ie infantry -, blue, mounted infantry-green facings,dragoons-orange facings ,cavalry-after1855 yellow facings, artillery-red and etc, what would his colors look like? I understand that a red perimeter was given for war time(ie civil war, mexican war) but did this also apply to the blackhawk war-1832, second seminole wars 1835-1842, utah war 1857-1858, and indian wars?
