[Gen'l Info] Identifying US Naval Ships from Old Pictures

My grandfather was in the Navy from 1919 through 1945 and I have many pictures from the 1920's and 1930's of him on different ships. There is nothing on the backs of the pictures identifying them (except for one or two) and I was wondering if there is any way to identify the ships by looking at the pictures. Are there specific details or equipment that would identify the differences. I do have a list of the ships he served and the dates of service but, a lot of the pictures have no dates either. Any information you can give me to help me put these pictures in order so that I can put them to disc before they totally fade away would be most appreciated.

Sincerely,

Pam
