Frank O'Driscoll Hunter's papers are at the Library at Maxwell Library in Alabama. The below bio from the catalog at Maxwell indicates he never rose above 2 star rank.

(1894-1982). Major General. USAAF, 1917-1946. Born 8 December 1894, Savannah, GA. Air Service Tactical School, 1923. Served to grade of Sergeant, Aviation Section, Signal Enlisted Reserve Corps, 1917; commissioned First Lieutenant, Aviation Section, Signal Officer Reserve Corps, September 1917. Career assignments include: various duties as company and field grade officer, 1917-1942; Commander, VIII Fighter Command, 1942-1943; Commander, First Air Force, 1943-1946. Retired March 1946. Hunter AFB, GA was named in his honor. Died 25 June 1982, Savannah, GA.
