That's a really low serial number in the range of the M1851 carbine--is it possible the 771 was preceded by a "C" (which would make it 100,771--an 1859 carbine)? Were there any other distinctive features that would help identify the model? Was there a label or other attribution that identified it as a California Volunteer piece? Thanks for your help!
