I belong to a lineage society which is exploring the following question:
During the Colonial period and up until the beginning of the Revolutionary War was an Ensign or Sergeant Major considered an officer?
Our present eligibility list for membership covers the individual colonies. Each colony notes:
Commissioned Officer in the Colonial Military and Naval Forces. There are some variations, i.e., Carolina, Maryland and Virginia include Rangers.
We would like a better understanding of rank as described above with documentation/sources. Thank you very much.
