[WW II] 9mm Luger

Sirs,

I am a Law Enforcement officer and recently, my department seized a 9mm Luger pistol. It was stamped 1929 at the base of the barrel, and had a single "42", and "17" stamped in various locations. The most shocking, and most exciting, discovery was a German military crest stamped on the underside of the barrel. I believe, an eagle roosting on a swastika, above the number 63. I didn't have any magnification, and it was pretty small.

My question is can this pistol be traced with any degree of acuracy? If it is a truely historical piece, myself and other officers would like to see the pistol saved. Any help in identifying this piece would be appreciated.
