[Gen'l Info] Why are divisions numbered as they are?

Hello, I'm a question-and-answer columnist for The Charlotte Observer newspaper in North Carolina. One of my readers asked why divisions, such as the 82nd and 101st are numbered as they are. What happened to all the ones in between? Thank you in advance for any help. Can you please e-mail me with information and sources at jelder@charlotteobserver.com? Thanks again.
