[Gen'l Info] Early American Military Organization

I am interested in learning about how the military during the first three US administrations was organized. My interest in is relating this to the organization of the Lewis & Clark Expedition. This venture was conducted as a military exercise, and, it would appear that it was largely successful because of the training and organization that both Lewis & Clark had in the military prior to the expedition.

For example, during the first year on the trail that had to conduct military court martials in order to instill order in the Corps. This leads me to look at the question of the nature of military discipline as it is applied in a frontier context.

I'd also like to be directed to some reference materials that would give me a more thorough knowledge of the military at the time.

Also, a companion issue is the relation of the military to the political parties during the Washington, Adams and Jefferson administrations.

Thank you.
