Re: [Gen'l Info] Military Peace Establishment Act

Some info from Heitman's Historical Register and Dictionary of the United States Army 1789-1903.

Merriweather Lewis Va.
Ens. 2 sublegion 1 May 1795

1 inf 1 Nov 1796
lt 3 Mar 1799
capt 5 Dec 1800
resd 4 Mar 1807
[died 11 Oct 1809]

William Clark Ky.
Lt inf 7 Mar 1792

4 sublegion 4 Sept 1792
resd 1 July 1796
2 lt arts 26 Mar 1804
1 lt 31 Jan 1806
resd 27 Feb 1807
[died 1 Sept 1838]

So my interpretation of these career summaries is that Lewis was a regular officer on duty at the time of his appointment to the Corps of Discovery, but Clark had resigned from the army and was reinstated in the artillery (arts) as a 2d Lt for the trip.
