While it is true battle was avoided when the Japanese Army evacuated Kiska before the American/Canadians landed, there was some rather nasty fighting on Attu. (See generally. The Capture of Attu [War Dept: 1944].) The 48th and 49th Artillery fought in this campaign. My father served in the 17th Infantry Regiment in Attu and wrote home of the battle.
