Just to round out the record of this very interesting professional soldier, prior to leaving D.C. (and resigning his US Army captaincy) for the Confederate lines, he undertook the creation of an espionage network in the capital (including the famous "Rebel Rose"), to report to him at Beauregard's HQ. He was promoted brigadier general after Shiloh.

And, as already indicated, in addition to his postwar publishing, he joined the Cuban rebellion against Spain as chief of staff and commanding general, and, with a price on his head, escaped the firing squad by getting out in time.
