We have a photo of our great-grandfather. It says on the back: "this picture taken in 1893 at St. Paul while I served with the 3rd Infantry, Co. 73 (possibly Co. B)at Ft. Snelling, Minn". At that time, we believe Ft. Snelling was a military base used to end the Indian Wars. However, we are unable to find rosters that would confirm the notation on the photo. Also there seems to be several "3rd Infantry" organizations. How do we determine the correct roster to search for? According to the Ft. Snelling Historian, those rosters were long ago transferred elsewhere. Family legend has it that great-grandad also served during the Spanish American War, but we don't know which theater. Nor do we know his rank. His name was Arthur H. Norris. Any suggestions, hints or clues are appreciated.
