It is entirely possible that your friends' conjectures concerning a collector are correct. The letter font and positioning of the marking are entirely different from any cartouches that I have ever seen so I discount that possibility.
I am grateful for your effort in this. Perhaps we will never know the definitive answer. If I do find it I will post here.
