Thanks for the tips! I had found the online description of the record groups several years ago. I have largely dealt with NARA, via mail and microfilm ordering and custom orders. I still am trying to find the report on experimental/trial arms of 1872-1874 era, for Company B, Fifth U.S. Infantry, commanded by Captain Andrew S. Bennett. The company was armed with, according to the ordnance returns, with Model 1871 Remingtons, Model 1870 Springfields and with Ward Burtons. Model 1868 Springfields, were isued while the unit was at Fort Gibson in exchange for the Ward-Burtons and the Remingtons. As the unit was also armed with the M1868 trowel bayone, it sure would be interesting to find Bennett's report, which NARA can't find (but can find the other 5th companies' reports).
