They are described in the Washington DC newspaper The Evening Star of 14 May 1861 as follows:
"They are uniformed in dark blue frock coats and fatigue caps, and all are provided with the almost indispensible havelocks. Two companies from New Haven, however, are uniformed in gray, with black stripes. All, save two companies with Minie muskets, are armed with Sharpe's rifles and saber bayonets."
