Your question and the article linked above really raise another question. The article mentions that the CIL team was unable to ID the remains. The article implies that the CIL team was not made aware of the ring recovered with the remains by the local citizen with the name "J.H. Branic" engraved in it. If the CIL was notified of the existance of this ring I'd think they would make a further attempt to link the remains to DNA of Sgt. Branic's relatives, assuming any can be found, and assuming there's enough DNA left in the remains to do that. Sometimes there isn't, from what I've been told.
