The Model 1855 Springfield was the standard rifle of the period and its sights were graduated to 500 yards. Some of the very early brass mounted ones had a detachable cross hair front sight that was stored in the stock (Reily).
Unfortunately, my copy of Reily is at work so I can't look up more for you. The rifle punch intrigues me as I don't think the 1855 had a (paper patch) punch.
