Patton was bever a general of the army.
He was in fact superceded by his immediate subordinate, Omar Bradley, to command the 12th Army Group in the invasion of Europe. Bradley earned five stars.
Patton was adaciuos and aggressive but the slapping incidents in Sicily and his failure as commander in Bavaria, post war, confined him to four star rank.
Perhaps his eccentricity in wearing authorized insignia has misled you on this issue
