May I add that there is also an 1812 era caisson on exhibit at the Sacketts Harbor Interpretation Center at Sacketts Harbor, NY, and that the caisson there appears to have kept most of its paint. I noted it in October 2004 as light grey with a pale blueish tinge on the side nearest to the window.
