For instance, what was "bag shot," maybe an older name for canister?

It appears to me as if the artillerists of that period used largely fixed ammunition, either shot, shell, or canister. There are ample supplies listed which are only present for the purpose of making cannon cartridges. For some reason I had been under the impression that fixed ammunition (one piece, only one ramming needed for one shot) was more of a Civil War innovation in the U.S., and certainly that was wrong.
