[Mexican War] San Patricios and Desertion

I enjoyed reading James Ronan's recent company dispatch article on the San Patricios. The figure given in the article for desertions (9207), however, is in error. According to Justin Smith, in War With Mexico, the number of regular army deserters was 2850. The total number of desertions for the 90,000 regulars and volunteers serving in the war is 6750.

I have been tracking all manner of records for 1st Dragoons Company B. This unit, about 80 enlisted men, suffered 5 deserters during the war--4 of the deserters were captured.
