Re: [Accoutrements] knapsacks
In Response To: [Accoutrements] knapsacks ()

Letter from Calendar Irvine, Commissary General of Purchases, to military storekeeper at Philadelphia dated 31 January 1818 orders knapsack in store that bear the mark of a "U.S." over an "R.R." within a circle outline (crude drawing shows this) to be given to a contractor "for the purpose of having R.R. expunged." Another letter dated 28 July 1814 states "The Knapsacks for the Rifle Men are to be the same as the Infty. - except the 4th Rifle Regt. which are marked for that Regt. alone." These are the only two primary sources I could find in a quick look through my files that mention any Rifle specific markings for knapsacks. If you need to reply, use the email address as I rarely look at the CMH forum. Stephen Osman
