I realize that the question was posed in the context of America (or the Western Hemisphere), but your reference to Metz and Joan of Arc does prompt a more recent thought: the "fortress" known as Dien Bien Phu in an area once part of Hindustan, later Tonkin(g), and even later Viet Nam where the component emplacements were named after females (e.g., Anne-Marie), rumored to have been lovers of the commander. Do we have any US fort named after a woman?
