Great, John! I would not be surprised if the "CS' did NOT signify Confederate States; however, if the information on the accession card be correct, why would the article bear both CS (as suggested) and WD/broad arrow? Might the CS denote "surplus"? If so, would not the military marking have been cancelled?

I hope you'll post (or email a copy directly to me) of the photo, when received.
