I have no source for this but it is my understanding that the individual so designated was permitted to carry the guidon, mounted on a lance.

In the 19th century US infantry, there were no guidons. However, Lance Sergeant John Mars was on the roles of 15th US Infantry at the Battle of Shiloh.
