Yes, I've also heard that story as to the ancient origin.
Both the US and CS army regs recognize the term in the context of a "temporary boost"--see, for example, identical provisions in re the recruiting service in both armies. My curiosity is over the modern USMC adoption of the term, and making it a "fixed" grade in the EM ranks.
