Tks, Mike. "The Gunny's" explanation on the web site you cited satisfies me--and shows that the Civil War era usage in US and CS manuals was consistent with the practice of several decades, at least, to treat this as a rank (or temporary rank) not unlike the brevet for officers.(It's nice to see that the Marines are/were sufficiently conscious of tradition as to resurrect "old" terms when the opportunity appears.)
