The National Archives and records Administration in Washington, D.C. Is one of the best primary sources. They hold the military and pension records of soldiers. They are indexed by state and name (using soundex code).

The website is www.nara.gov and has instructions on how to do genealogy and look up records. They also have a branch office in St. Louis.
