I am a volunteer at the Ocean County Historical Society in Toms River, NJ. I have made a diorama showing a representation of the "Blockhouse Fight" of March 24, 1782, where Capt Joshua Huddy was captured. The man who painted the figures did a great job but I have a problem with the uniforms. The attacking Loyalists are in green which is acceptable since they were assimilated into the Queens Rangers in New York City. Simcoe was able to allow Loyalists to wear green. My problem is with the Armed Boatmen under Capt. William Luce. Reports said his force was identified as sailors and Negros. Since they were probably also part of the Queens Rangers, what uniform that would identify them as "sailors" would they have worn? Prior to that time, their "uniforms" would probably have been personal clothing. Any help would be appreciated.
