In my article on Native involvement in the Spanish-American War, I mention four Lakota nuns who served as nurses in the US Army in 1898-1899. According to the source from whom I obtained this information, Lt.-Col. Brenda Finnicum, these women were paid $30 per month for the duration of their service. For comparison, I am now wondering how much white female and white male US Army medics were paid at this time? According to "Historical Statistics of the United States," basic pay for enlisted Army personnel in 1898 was $205 per annum. Does this include medics, as well as regular soldiers?
Thanks again for any assistance you can offer.
