According to my Army Paymaster's Manual, 1896, the following are the first year pay rates for:

Attached to Military Headquarters:
Veterinary Surgeon (senior)....$100/mo.
Veterinary Surgeon (junior).....$75/mo.
Hospital Matron..........................$10/mo.

Enlisted:
Hospital Steward........................$45/mo.
ActingHospital Steward.............$25/mo.
Hospital Corps. Private.............$18/mo.

Private (Art/Cav/Inf)....................$13/mo.
Corporal (Art/Cav/Inf).................$15/mo.
Sergeant (Art/Cav/Inf)................$18/mo.
Specialty qualifications earned higher rates of pay (farrier/saddler/musician, etc.. Rates of pay increased with additional years in service.
