It must be understood that the modern USMC rank of Lance Corporal, introduced in 1959, is not the historical lance corporal. Indeed, it it not a lance corporal at all. It is merely a name of a rank assigned to the pay grade above PFC and below corporal. It pays a historical homage to the position of Lance Corporal which was used until WWII. Likewise the modern Gunnery Sergeant; Master Gunnery Sergeant is however reflective of a highly technical status. When military bodies were comprised by a few NCOs and a vast number of privates, the rank of corporal had great status. Lance Corporal was an important temporary assignment to test the skills of a private to determine if promotion was merited. While sometimes acknowledged in different historical periods by a single chevron, the temporary assignment was often not indicated by a rank badge. Sometimes a cat is a cat, sometimes a lion.
