It's a Model 1874 plate that was worn by a militia or national guard unit. From which state I don't know. Looks to be authentic from the photo. They were worn up to about the turn of the century. At the time of the Spanish American War there were many more men in national guard and militia units than in the regular army, I think that the ratio was about ten to one.
