Continental Rifleman, 1775

SYMBOL OF THE COMPANY OF MILITARY HISTORIANS

The seal of the Company of Military Historians commemorates the founding of the United States Army. On June 14, 1775 the Continental Congress resolved "That six companies of expert riflemen be immediately raised in Pennsylvania, two in Maryland, and two in Virginia."
These "...remarkably stout  and hardy men, many of them exceeding six feet in height, clad in hunting shirts and armed with a rifle-barreled gun, a tomahawk... and a long knife..." were the first United States Regulars.

The Company of Military Historians was founded in 1949 as an educational, scientific, and literary institution devoted to the study and dissemination of "information on the uniforms, equipment, history, and traditions of members of the Armed Forces of the United States worldwide and other nations serving in the Western Hemisphere."

The membership includes both professionals and amateurs in the field of American military history. On the rolls are not only historians, artists, writers, curators, librarians, teachers, and researchers, but people from virtually every walk of life. Among the members are serious collectors of militaria: uniforms, accoutrements, weapons, equipage, military miniatures, artwork, and books.

Members receive, free of charge and financed by dues, a quarterly publication, the Military Collector & Historian (familiarly, the Company Journal). The Journal is professional in content and is profusely illustrated. Its richly annotated articles cover such subjects as weapons, accoutrements, uniforms, materiel, and colors and standards. They also include information on military organizations, unit histories, military art and artists, recently published books and other publications, and the activities of the society and its members.

The Company also publishes and distributes a series of military prints, Military Uniforms in America, to those who wish to subscribe.

A general meeting is held annually, usually over a Spring weekend that includes seminars, discussion groups, exhibits, tours of historic sites, a flea market, a business meeting, a dinner, and appropriate entertainment.

Regional meetings are held regularly in those areas that have local chapters, which are organized and administered by local members.
