Author John Steinle…..“Colorado in the Civil War”

Good Afternoon,

Please find below the SIGN IN information for our next Zoom meeting, which is the 2nd Monday of October,

the 9th, at 7pm CST to 8:30 CST. 

We will have Author John Steinle join us to discuss his book COLORADO in the CIVIL WAR.

 We will also go around the horn to each participant to update us on any books they have read, or reading

or writing, any new collectibles they have received, etc. 

We had a terrific meeting yesterday, September 11,  with 13 participants from two CMH chapters attending. 

1) Bill Jordan gave a detailed account of the Battle of Veghel, during Market Garden, WW2

2) Book recommendation:   IN THE SHADOW OF THE ROUND TOPS, see attached pic of book.

3) Discussed Prussian firearms.

4) Discussed water color portrait, circa 1813,  of Major Chester Lyman, 9th US Infantry. 

5) Went around the horn and several members discussed books they were writing, etc.etc.

Good morning, our next zoom meeting is scheduled for August 14th, 7pm central time. 

Please join us, we are having a great time sharing information, passion, and learning history

all at the same time.  

This month our meeting will focus on  “Collectors Night”     Share any of your treasures

or items you are wishing to obtain, or anything at all. Displays, artifacts, questions and answers all in

one evening. 

In September, we will have Bill Jordan presenting “Operation Market Garden, September 1944.”

We had 8 members from the Plains chapter members present  (Missouri: 3  Kansas: 2, Iowa: 1, Michigan: 1, Nebraska: 1) 

 Including David Bennett, Sally Bennett, James Lundgren, Terry Van Meter, Peter Grande, Bill Jordan, Rick Simmons, Ken Bunger. 

 and 5 from the California chapter, including Alan Aimone , Jon Woodland, Will Gorenfield, Ed Hull, and Steve Fowler.

  During our meeting we went around the horn and discussed what Military books we were currently reading and / or, what books or papers we were currently writing. 

 We also had a power point presentation on: The 1st US Infantry at the Battle of Lundy’s Lane, July 25 1814.    We also reviewed the Military Plate published in the Journal in 2014 of the 1st Infantry at Lundy’s Lane.

The Chapter’s third Zoom Meeting was held Monday June 12th.  Guest Speaker and Chapter member 

Bill Jordan, of Red Oak, Iowa,  presented “THE SOUTHERN CAMPAIGN DURING THE AMERICAN REVOLUTION- COUNTDOWN TO HISTORY”

The presentation was outstanding and covered the campaigns, both American and British commanders, the troops, etc. 

Member Rick Simmons shared a newly completed case set containing a Civil War Confederate used Maynard Carbine, extra barrels, powder flask, etc. 

Member Dave Bennett shared and discussed an original image and signed document of General Daniel Morgan, who fought in the Southern Campaign of the American Revolution. 

Member Ken Bunger attended the ribbon cutting ceremony of an renovated Visitors Center at Fort Atkinson Nebraska over the past weekend, reported the displays had been improved and recommended we all visit.

 Members in attendance were from Kansas City Missouri, Red Oak, Iowa, Monroe Michigan and Hannibal Missouri.  

Our next Zoom Meeting will be held the 2nd Monday of June, the 12th at 7pm central. 

July’s presentation will be “The 1st US Infantry at the Battle of Lundy’s Lane, July 25 1814” by Dave Bennett.

The Chapter’s second Zoom Meeting was held Monday May 6th.  Guest Speaker and Chapter member Peter Grande, of Leavenworth, Kansas,  presented “HISTORY OF THE UNITED STATES DISCIPLINARY BARRACKS – FORT LEAVENWORTH.”

The presentation was highly fascinating and Peter did a masterful job recounting the history of the Disciplinary Barracks.

Dave Bennett shared and discussed some of his collectibles, including a Nathan Starr 1813 Cavalry saber and an 1862 dated Corporals 

appointment in the 9th Cavalry, Missouri State Militia signed by Colonel Odom Guitar. 

Paul Rosewitz, St. Louis Chapter President, was invited to attend and give an update from the National meeting, specifically

information regarding the 2024 National Meeting in order for chapter members to start planning attendance. 

Our condolences to chapter member Bill Jordan, who was unable to attend due to the passing of his father. 

 Several members attended the Kansas City Collectors Club military Show held in Overland Park Kansas on May 6th. 

Our next Zoom Meeting will be held the 2nd Monday of June, the 12th at 7pm central.

The Chapter’s first Zoom Meeting was held April 10th. Guest Speaker Bill Jordan, Red Oak, Iowa,

presented “THE HISTORY OF THE US ARMY REMOUNT PROGRAM 1800-1942” which was 

well received.  A couple of collectibles were shared by those members in attendance. Attendees

were from Missouri, Kansas, Iowa, Nebraska and Mark Kasal VP of Membership joined the call as well.

Several members are planning to attend the Kansas City Military Collectors Club Show on May 6th, in Overland Park, Kansas.

  • Fort Leavenworth Visit, February 2018
    The annual Leavenworth, Kansas, military show in February 2018 was an occasion for a few Central Plains members and guests to gather to discuss the next field trip in the spring.  In the picture...
