TEXAS CHAPTER UPDATES
In November 2024, several Texas Chapter members and spouses traveled to the Camp Verde General Store and Restaurant in Center Point, Texas (near Kerrville). Beginning in the mid-1850’s, Camp Verde was the home base of the U.S. Army’s Camel Corps. A general store opened in 1857 to serve the post and remains in business today. The current building was constructed in 1909 and it is the third iteration (the first two stores were destroyed, one by a fire and the other by a flood).
Camp Verde itself was located approximately one mile west of the general store. Nothing remains of the post except for some ruins of officers’ quarters located on land that is not available to the public.
A good lunch at the restaurant was had by all, followed by an overview of the Camel Corps at Camp Verde
On September 21, 2024, the Texas Chapter held its first meeting in several years. The meeting topics included Chapter organization, recruiting additional members, and potential venues for field trips. Texas has a rich military history and there are many places which should be of interest to Chapter members
The next meeting is scheduled for Saturday, November 16, 2024 at Camp Verde, Texas. Camp Verde was the home base of the Camel Corps when the U.S. Army tested the use of camels as pack animals in the late 1850’s. The meeting starts at 1:00 p.m. and lunch will be available at the Camp Verde Restaurant (each attendee pays for their own lunch).
